SYMPTOMS
Working with Dr. Jacqueline Swensen in psychotherapy or psychoanalysis can help to address the underlying causes for your symptoms and make permanent changes. Whether it is anxiety, depression, addictions or compulsions, these symptoms often begin years before the symptoms manifest themselves. Among these symptoms are:
• Anxiety for no apparent reason
• Worry that consumes much of each day
• Addictive behaviors
• Eating disorders
• Regrets that interfere with present life
• Obsessive and compulsive thoughts and behavior
• Absence of energy and motivation
• Pervasive envy of others
Much of the medical profession finds it easiest to prescribe drugs
as
a quick fix for emotional disorders. Some clients begin psychotherapy already on medication while others need to be prescribed medication for a period of time. I refer these clients to psychiatrists whom I work closely with, and who also share the view that life —
for most people — can eventually be lived free from psychiatric medications.
A Note About Loneliness
Chronic loneliness — an emotional state of feeling empty and isolated for long periods of time — can affect all areas of our lives and leave us desperate. Some of us are materially successful but tortured by feelings of isolation. Social and financial status can leave one secretive or shameful about one’s loneliness.
Woody Allen & Psychoanalysis
“People always tease me. They say, look at you, you went for so much psychoanalysis and you’re so neurotic, you wind up marrying a girl so much younger than you. You don’t like to go through tunnels, you don't like to stand near the drain in the shower. But I could also say to them, I’ve had a very productive life. I’ve worked very hard, I’ve never fallen prey to depression. I’m not sure I could have done all of that without being in psychoanalysis. People would say to me, oh, it’s just a crutch. And I would say, yes. It's a crutch, and exactly what I need in this point in my life is a crutch.”
